Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Project SEED began in Berkeley, California in 1963.
What is your primary product or service?
We use a Socratic, group discovery method of instruction to provide supplemental instruction in advanced mathematics in elementary and middle schools. We also provide professional development for classroom teachers, helping them improve their own teaching of mathematics. Project SEED's curriculum and methods are particularly well aligned with the Common Core State Standards.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Project SEED staff have all majored in mathematics or a math-based science. Working for Project SEED allows them to use their love of mathematics to help struggling students succeed.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
It is rare to find instructors at the elementary school level who have a strong background in math. They may not understand the reasoning behind the concepts they teach, and thus disadvantage their students by asking them to memorize procedures by rote. Project SEED's guided discovery methods lead students to discover mathematical principles. The students understand them better and remember them longer.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Project SEED works with school districts around the Bay Area as well as in Baltimore County, Detroit, Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Anson County. We are always interested in expanding.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Project SEED is an nonprofit organization.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
Project SEED's founder, William Johntz once said, "The true intellectuals in our society are the children. Adult genius is just the part of childhood that is retained."
